Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called senior Trump administration officials to express support for Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman after the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.
Turkish officials appear to have dismissed a theory that Jamal Khashoggi's body was given to a mystery local collaborator in Istanbul. The murder has drawn withering criticism of Riyadh from around the world.
Rather than weighing Prince Mohammed's chances of retaining power, officials in the White House and around the region have turned instead to the question of what effect the lingering stigma of the killing may have on the grand plans laid out by the 33-year-old prince, who could rule Saudi Arabia for the next half century.
Khashoggi, a prominent Saudi journalist and critic of the regime, was last seen entering the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul on October 2.
Saudi Arabia has arrested 18 men on suspicion of killing Mr Khashoggi but denied that Crown Prince Mohammed ordered his death or had any involvement in it.
The Israeli PM had asked top United States officials recently not to abandon their support for bin Salman over the killing of Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Turkey's Istanbul, according to multiple reports.
Prince Turki reiterated that the Kingdom is committed to bringing to justice those responsible for Khashoggi's murder "and whoever else failed to uphold the law".
Khashoggi's family rejected the characterization in a statement to the newspaper.
Khashoggi was killed when he walked into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last month, according to a Turkish prosecutor.
"We're going to find the fact pattern", he said.
Some claimed the body was wrapped up in a rug to be transported from the scene, while others said the hit squad carried the dismembered corpse away in several bags.
Saudi Arabia has changed its account of what happened to Khashoggi.
Turkey, for its part, said Khashoggi was strangled the moment he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, the city's chief prosecutor said on Wednesday, adding that it was a premeditated murder.
After Saudi Arabia admitted that Khashoggi was killed in its Istanbul consulate, five high-ranking officials were dismissed, including bin Salman's media chief and the deputy head of the Saudi intelligence service. "The president said we will demand accountability for those who were involved in the commission of this heinous crime".
US State Department spokesman Robert Palladino on Thursday called for Khashoggi's remains to be located and returned to his family for burial as soon as possible.
