It's possible iPhone XR demand isn't meeting Apple's expectations, but exactly the reason that's happening is hard to determine. Similarly, with iPhones no longer launching on a set schedule these days (with last year's iPhone X launching in November and the iPhone XR launching in late October of this year), a random 12 week snapshot of iPhone sales is not almost as instructive as it was years ago.
In September, Apple launched three new iPhones, the premium iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max that start at Rs 99,900 and go all the way up to Rs 144,900. The decrease translates to 100,000 fewer units daily from Taiwanese supplier Foxconn, and likely, similar cuts at another Taiwanese supplier, Pegatron.
As for Wistron, Apple has asked the smaller iPhone assembler to stand by for rush orders, but supply chain sources claim the company will in fact receive none for the XR this holiday season.
According to Nikkei, this means that Foxconn will be producing almost 100,000 units less every day based on the new estimates available.
"The utilization for the XR production is not reaching its maximum capacity now", the source said.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Wall Street analysts say that while Apple's subpar guidance for the coming quarter is one factor, the company's announcement last week of the change in unit sales disclosure has been especially rattling to investors. And ultimately, after Apple's continued considerable success, I'm not willing to bet that the company got its customer read wrong this soon after the iPhone's triple launch.
According to a report by Nikkei Asian Review, the most affordable iPhone of 2018 is definitely not doing as well, sales-wise, as Apple anticipated it would.
In 2016, Apple introduced a cheaper iPhone called the SE, at a starting price of $399, but failed to lure more customers to buy that product.
Maybe iPhone sales decline over time, or maybe Cupertino has something to hide. Apple is also said to have revised planned units for older iPhone models for this quarter from 20 million to 25 million.
