Elon Musk says he plans to offer the public free rides through a tunnel he bored under a Los Angeles suburb to test a new type of transportation system. Since then, Musk has purchased a boring machine to tunnel under the Los Angeles neighborhood with the hope of making modifications to the machinery that will allow tunnels to be dug more quickly.
"The objective is to demonstrate that a lift can be built in very small footprints and within existing buildings, whether they are houses, office buildings, or retail parking lots", the Boring Company explained on its website about the Hawthorne test tunnel.
The tunnel runs about 2 miles under the streets of Hawthorne, where Musk's SpaceX headquarters is located. Musk went on to explain that the Boring Company will host an opening event on its launch, and free rides will be provided to the public the following day.
Musk has previously said that his tunnelling company "started out as a joke" and admitted that the project might fail.
U.S. high-tech entrepreneur Elon Musk took to Twitter on Sunday to announce the opening of the first tunnel of his high-speed underground transportation system. Existing Chicago trains take about 40-45 minutes to travel that same route.
In addition to this tunnel, the Boring Company is also working an a tunnel between Washington DC and NY. "I think real", Musk replied.
