Jason Day leads the Australian charge but it is the electric performance of Tiger Woods that has the golf world buzzing after the opening round of the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

For the 18th, Woods got himself withing striking distance of an eagle at the par-5 finishing hole; and sure enough, he buried the 35-foot putt, eliciting a patented fist pump from Woods. along with raucous applause from the East Lake gallery. He opened with a 62 at Aronimink two weeks ago on a rain-softened course and stayed within five shots of the lead the rest of the way until he tied for sixth.

On day one of the final event of the US PGA Tour season, Woods sent fans into a frenzy when he reached the par-5 18th in two shots at East Lake Golf Club.

Justin Rose, in his debut as the No. 1 player in the world, got up-and-down from the bunker for birdie on the 18th for a 66 and was tied with Gary Woodland.

A new $10-million bonus to be split among the PGA Tour's top 10 regular season finishers, the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 is created to add a new layer of interest over the course of the regular season, which culminates with the Wyndham Championship, the final event before the FedExCup Playoffs.

"We don't play very many places like this where if you have control of your ball, if you have control of your game, you're probably going to have a good chance to win", Thomas said.

"I felt like it was a day that I could have gone low". I missed every putt, blew it through the hole. "I've earned my way back, " he said. "The only hard part was getting my speed on the greens".

"It would enhance the year, " Woods said at the prospect of PGA Tour win No. 80. "I just want to play a little bit better and beat him".

"It's something that I haven't done in a number of years, and this is a good starting point".

Rose, Finau, Johnson and Thomas could deny DeChambeau should either win the Tour Championship while Bradley, should he win, would need for DeChambeau to finish tied second or worse. "And otherwise, I went pretty conservative with it".

"I feel like I'm playing well, I just can't put it all together and it is frustrating", Leishman said.

Rose is coming off a playoff loss at the BMW Championship last week, and as the No. 2 seed in the FedEx Cup is in the best spot to capture the $10 million prize.

While there is a lot of golf yet to be played this week, the leaderboard shows Woods projected to finish second in the FedEx Cup if all players were to maintain their current positions in the field.
