With a two-shot win at the Tour Championship in Atlanta, legendary U.S. golfer Tiger Woods clinched the comeback he longed for, after a near two-year absence in the sport and a championship drought of more than five years.
The 14-time Major champion is aiming for his first PGA Tour victory since 2013 when Woods won the Bridgestone Invitational.
Just more than a year ago, Woods, 42, did not know if he would ever play golf again, let alone win another tournament. Justin Rose, who entered the day three shots behind Woods, made a key birdie on 18 to win the FedEx Cup title - a four-tournament playoff with a $10 million prize to the victor.
"At the beginning of the year, it was a tall order but as the year progressed and I proved I could play, I knew I could do it again".
He'd done it 79 previous times, but Tiger Woods says No. 80 is pretty special.
2016 - In September announces that he hopes to make his competitive return to golf at the PGA Tour's October 13-16 Safeway Open in Napa, California.
"I found a swing, put the pieces together and knew I could do it again".
It is fascinating that Woods has evolved into the people's golfer, a domain he couldn't possible inhabit after tales of his extra-marital affairs emerged.
Woods had started the day with a three-shot lead over Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy. I've got a bunch of guys behind me who are playing well.
Tiger Woods had a five-shot lead after six holes of the final round, and there is no other player that generates interest in the sport, especially after the back surgeries he has overcome. I've seen the way he's been swinging the club and the way he's been playing. There have been 118 different winners on the PGA Tour since Woods' last victory in 2013.
The victory moves him to second on the all-time PGA winners list behind Sam Snead (82).
He fired a 62 earlier this month and has also done enough to force himself into the US team for next week's Ryder Cup.
April 1, 2014: Woods announces he will miss the Masters for the first time in his career after undergoing microdiscectomy surgery on a pinched nerve in his back after being advised to do so for his "immediate and long-term health".
After five long years, athletes and golf fans everywhere were finally able to celebrate another Tiger Woods win.
"This is going to be up there with one of the better accomplishments I have had, " Woods said about the possibility of winning Sunday.
"It's been tough. I've had a not-so-easy last couple of years", he said.
Woods also had a chance to win the FedEx Cup, but his hopes were dependent on Rose finishing worse than sixth in the tournament.
"I didn't want to get run over", Woods said later with a laugh. They wanted to see their man obviously pick this up, as well. That might be enough to return him to No. 1 in the world.
The next stop for Woods is to board a plane with the rest of his USA teammates for France and the Ryder Cup this week.
