BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra on Thursday launched another scattering attack on Congress president Rahul Gandhi and refused all the allegations claimed by businessman Vijay Mallya against the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. "Finance Minister Jaitley must resign and this should be investigated", Gandhi said, just a day after Arun Jaitley denied that he had a meeting with Mallya before he fled the country in 2016.
The ruling on whether Indian tycoon Vijay Mallya can be extradited from Britain to India to face fraud charges will be given on December 10, a London judge said on Wednesday, after she heard closing submissions in the case.
Before attending the Westminster Magistrates" Court, the former Kingfisher Boss was inundated with many journalist questions and to one of their asks, he said "I left because I had a scheduled meeting in Geneva.
The Minister said besides this one-sentence exchange where he misused his privilege as a Rajya Sabha Member in order to further his commercial interest as a bank debtor, he never gave Mallya any appointment to meet him.
In fact Mallya had misused access as an MP to accost him in a corridor in Parliament to claim he had made an offer of settlement for outstanding loans, Jaitley had said.
However, Jaitley rejected the claim, saying Mallya was "factually false". He said India wants to know what transpired during the meeting between Mallya and Jaitley.
Sure there is nowhere back for Vijay Mallya, as he looks increasingly likely to be extradited back to India.
"This is an open and shut case" where an economic offender talks to the minister before fleeing to London within days of this meeting, the Congress president stressed at the briefing, minutes after the BJP accused the previous UPA government of giving a "sweet deal" to the beleaguered Kingfisher Airlines to keep it afloat. "We need proper disclosures, full inquiries on this", he said.
On 16 October, 2015, the CBI first issued a look-out notice on Mallya asking the Bureau of Immigration (BoI) to detain Mallya at the airport if he tries to leave the country. Clearly, Mallya was declared as a defaulter even then. "I did not even receive the papers that he was holding in his hand". "The notice issued for Vijay Mallya was changed to the inform notice".
The Congress also said on its official Twitter handle that Mallya met Jaitley "several times" before escaping the country to discuss a settlement plan. "Chowkidaar nahin, Bhagidaar hai (Not a watchman, but a partner)", he tweeted in Hindi.
