British Airways CEO Alex Cruz apologized Friday, telling a radio interviewer, "We will work with any customer affected and we will compensate any financial hardship suffered".
Another BA customer, Melissa, 54, from Bangalore, booked a flight to Houston on August 22, a day after the airline said its system was compromised. Describing the attack, the company said: "It was having access to our systems in an illicit way, it was very sophisticated". It was very sophisticated.
Shares in BA's parent company, IAG, were down 3 per cent on Friday. "The company's transparency and frankness serve as a good example to other companies who are prone to minimising the consequences". As Julian Saunders, founder of Port.im, a British software maker that helps companies comply with GDPR, told Bloomberg, "At some point a line needs to be drawn and this might be the best time to do it". The question for regulators is "whether BA's actions warrant a fine".
But a member of the British Airways Gold club said yesterday: "I'm astonished".
BA informed customers affected by the attack yesterday, Cruz said. The National Crime Agency and the National Cyber Security Centre are also reportedly investigating.
As Cruise reports, Cruz has reported compensation to those customers who have been financially damaging, and has made it clear that "charging" was not a violation of the company's encrypted information.
