Accepting the Summit's Call to Action on behalf of the United Nations, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa said: "This Summit and its Call to Action make an important contribution towards achieving our collective goal: to keep global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius in line with the Paris Agreement". Conceived as an effort to preserve and promote that momentum, the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States and his subsequent decision, fulfilling a campaign promise, to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, gave the summit yet another goal.
Kerry signed the agreement to combat climate change on behalf of the United States while serving as President Barack Obama's secretary of state.
Trump said the worldwide agreement was unfair to the United States and would hurt the economy.
Kerry's criticism of Trump came a day after the president blasted Kerry on Twitter for meeting with high-level members of the Iranian government.
Gore, a Democrat, also criticized Trump for denying the death toll from last year's hurricane in Puerto Rico was almost 3,000 people.
