On Saturday, the president responded on Twitter by saying: "Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon".

The First Lady also said she was "open" to visiting James' I Promise School for at-risk children in Akron, Ohio.

LeBron James has opened his school named "I Promise" to 240 third and fourth graders in his hometown Akron, Ohio.

Ahmadinejad told Trump he should "love all" instead of comparing basketball greats James and Michael Jordan.

Trump was unswayed by James' charity, saying it was hard to make "LeBron look smart".

In the interview, the National Basketball Association superstar said the President was using athletics and athletes to split up the country and would not sit down across from Trump if he were given the opportunity.

James, who has been critical of Trump in the past, said during the interview that Trump was using sports to sow divisions in the US. But James has been outspoken about the president's policies, once calling him a "bum" for disinviting the Golden State Warriors to the White House.

King isn't the only athlete who has shown support for James.

"Well, in that case, I may", James said.

"What I've noticed over the past few months ... he's kinda used sports to kinda divide us, and that's something that I can't relate to", James said.

His comment sparked huge reaction from James' supporters - but the most surprising response came from First Lady Melania Trump. In his interview with Lemon, he said he'd consider running for president if he believed he was the only person who could stop Trump from being re-elected. In June she issued a statement at odds with the Trump administration's policy of separating families who cross the USA border illegally declaring that she "hates" to see children separated at the border.

In an interview that aired last Monday, James and Lemon discussed James' recent opening of a school for underprivileged children and politics.

Geraldo Rivera, the journalist and Trump confidant, broke with the president to say he wished Trump "turned other cheek re @KingJames & @donlemon While I disagree with their conclusion that @POTUS is using sports to divide America along racial lines, they're both honest & intelligent men".
