It's no secret that Mateo Kovacic is looking to leave Real Madrid, and Jose Mourinho is definitely not hesitating in trying to seal his transfer, Manchester United having made a 60 million euro bid for his services.
The wheels have threatened to come off during the club's pre-season tour of the United States, with the Portuguese becoming increasingly outspoken and irritated by a variety of matters.
Following Saturday's 4-1 International Champions Cup defeat to Liverpool in Ann Arbor, Mourinho voiced uncertainty over whether he would be able add to Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant as new summer acquisitions.
United's hierarchy are sympathetic to the manager's unease and there remains optimism that Mourinho could still make a fourth signing, at least. I am confident I get one.
"I'm confident I will get one, but I think two I'm not going to get, which is not a drama", said Mourinho.
"People like Herrera, Bailly, Darmian, Mata, all these guys, were phenomenal during the whole pre-season, playing nearly every minute of every game. He is an honest man, always ready to give everything for the team".
"As I was saying to the players, some of my players will be in an wonderful condition", he said.
Mourinho gave United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward his list of "five names a few months ago" and is now playing the waiting game as the deadline creeps closer.
He has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford and it is understood manager Jose Mourinho is willing to sell the France forward. "I know the one who are ready for anything, and I know the ones who are not ready".
"It's not going to be very different". We tried with the players we had available to organise the best possible team to defend against them.
"And with the fantastic spirit we have, in the majority of the players, I repeat: in the majority of the players, we have a fantastic spirit, we go with everything we have to the Premier League".
Romelu Lukaku has returned from his post-World Cup break.
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho paid tribute to his players after ending their USA tour with victory over Real Madrid. "I agree with that. The Premier League could and should do that".
