Another major blaze known as the Ferguson Fire broke out near the popular Yosemite National Park nearly three weeks ago, on July 13, and was only 39 percent contained by Thursday, officials said. Several roads in the area remained closed.
"We're fighting nature with the amount of material we're putting in the environment, and that material traps heat, and the heat fosters fires, and the fires keep burning", he said.
Covelo is a highly rural area in northern Mendocino County, east of Highway 101.
Twin fires in Mendocino and Lake counties had burned 14 homes and threatened 12,000 more.
As of Thursday, there were 18 wildfires burning across the state.
