Andrew Cuomo debated actress and activist Cynthia Nixon Wednesday night ahead of their Democratic gubernatorial primary next month. Two topics in particular got the two trading jabs. immigration and public transportation.
Gov. Cuomo: Can you please stop interrupting?
The hour-long debate, the only one before the September 13 primary, was filled with plenty of heated exchanges where Nixon and Cuomo interrupted each other, scolded each other, and hurled insults at each other.
"What I would say is that we're not talking about children smoking marijuana", she said. But Nixon's senior campaign strategist said she is offering the types of solutions for which Democratic voters are asking.
The President slammed Cuomo on twitter writing "How does a politician, Cuomo, known for pushing people and businesses out of his state, not to mention having the highest taxes in the USA, survive making the statement, WE'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, IT WAS NEVER THAT GREAT?"
Nixon chimed in and replied: 'How am I a corporate donor? "Working men and women don't have corporations", Cuomo said. He criticized Nixon for releasing four years of tax returns on a recent Friday afternoon, when reporters typically are taking off for the weekend and people pay less attention to the news, calling her second only to President Donald Trump in her lack of transparency.
"And you're a corporation", Cuomo said smiling.
Nixon also invoked Trump's name as a reason for why she should be New York's governor, saying "when it comes to opposing Donald Trump in NY state, we already have a corrupt corporate Republican in the White House".
"Yeah, as soon as you do", Cuomo responded.
Cuomo received almost $113,000 in campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry from January 2015 to mid-January 2018, and he headlined a gala funded by big oil companies in May.
Nixon is demanding that the room be a balmy 76 degrees.
'You're in charge of fighting terrorism.
"I do work to protect workers and to give rights to workers, and paid family leave is one of the things that does it", said Cuomo. Cuomo did not respond.
"He used the MTA like an ATM, and we see the result", she said.
"My opponent is upset with the Koch brothers because they're the only ones who take more corporate money than she does", said Cuomo, a zinger that made little sense when aimed at Nixon.
