One of Cohen's attorneys is Lanny Davis, a longtime friend and adviser to the Clintons.
"Arrived back in Washington last night from a very emotional reopening of a major U.S. Steel plant in Granite City, Illinois, only to be greeted with the ridiculous news that the highly conflicted Robert Mueller and his gang of 13 Angry Democrats obviously can not find Collusion...", Trump tweeted.
But Trump doesn't act surprised by the conversation, which contradicts his campaign's insistence that he knew nothing about the Karen McDougal business. Giuliani says prosecutors have more than 100 recordings, and about a dozen have to do with the president. Cohen is under investigation by the US attorney for the Southern District of NY over his business dealings.
Giuliani declined to name the witnesses.
Giuliani said Trump's view is: "Enough is enough". If Cohen, who specialized in making deals and making Trump's problems go away, were to cut a deal, he would do so with an eye toward eliminating or cutting his potential punishment. This prep meeting would have been on June 7th, 2016. There were several native Russians in the room, including Natalia Veselnitskaya, a lawyer with links to the Kremlin.
Trump, according to The Times, in the past complained to staff about what he called a conflict because the two men had a bad business deal over fees at the Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Va., which led to Mueller, who was Federal Bureau of Investigation director at the time, to resign his membership there.
The official story later changed. Donald Trump Jr.'s own emails and congressional testimony revealed that he was very eager about the prospect of receiving dirt on Hillary Clinton.
"The idea Michael Cohen was taping him, when I heard that, I felt like we were back in the 26th floor of Trump Tower", Nunberg said, referring to the Manhattan headquarters of Trump's campaign. He wanted to speak with wealthy Moscow entrepreneur and entertainer, Emin Agalarov, the publicist's client, before finalizing details.
He appeared to be referencing a dispute over golf fees at Trump's Virginia golf club that was reported in the New York Times. Earlier this month, however, he said that his loyalty is first to his family and country, not the President. He again said the tape does not show Trump breaking the law.
Giuliani told Fox he has hired technicians to determine if someone tampered with the tape, which cuts off abruptly.
Giuliani also taunted Mueller in an interview with Axios published Monday. "Did you ever see Mr. Trump be loyal to him?" He also dismissed Cohen's claims about Trump's knowledge of the June 2016 meeting as "flat out untrue". And that direct line between Russian interference and the president has never been proved before.
No evidence has publicly emerged that the Trump campaign has engaged in these activities, though special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation is ongoing.
Trump complained that he had returned from a trip Midwest Thursday "only to be greeted with the ridiculous news" that Mueller and his team "cannot find Collusion... so now they are looking at my Tweets (along with 53 million other people)".
