Jordan has opted out of the final year of that contract he signed with L.A.in 2015, and the Mavericks intend to pursue him as an unrestricted free agent, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Friday.
I guess Embiid wanted to play with James after all.
James' camp and the Cavaliers have been in regular dialogue since the season ended. He lifted them to a seven-game series win in the 2016 NBA Finals over the Golden State Warriors, and he has been involved in the community around the city. With Cleveland's lack of cap space, and LeBron's rocky relationship with Dan Gilbert, the Los Angeles Lakers seem to be the best fit in a free agency where no team seems to be the "perfect fit" for LeBron's now or longer term to win championships.
Among those choices, Philadelphia feels like a distant third. Keep in mind, the Lakers will also be able to add some veterans willing to sign for the minimum if James end up in Los Angeles.
The team has young stars.
James would certainly be that star.
A source familiar with the Cavs' thinking said re-signing James is Cleveland's "Plan A, B and C" when it comes to free agency. General manager Bryan Colangelo's resignation following an investigation into whether he created Twitter accounts to criticize his own players, has given the impression that the team isn't operating in concert and then would turn off James quickly.
The Cavaliers and Lakers always seemed like the odds-on favorites to land James.
"That's the sense you get with him and his people", an anonymous GM told Sporting News.
The Lakers are reportedly using the Kyrie Irving and Paul George trades as a framework for their offer, though San Antonio wants more given the expectation that the deal will seal James joining the Lakers.
Even after 15 years in the league, James is coming off one of the top seasons of his career, ending with his eighth straight trip to the NBA Finals. Appearing on The Lowe Post podcast last week (H/T Bleacher Report), Windhorst said, "Everybody will be on holiday on July 4".
The super-sleuths at Reddit's r/NBA subreddit scoured flight logs to find a private plane that went from Cleveland to Miami to Antigua this week, and on Saturday morning was headed to Los Angeles. Both Vardon and ESPN's Zach Lowe disputed that report. George, a Palmdale native, also became a free agent this week and has been linked to the Lakers. A year ago it was Kyrie Irving asking to be traded from Cleveland and the Knicks trying to move Anthony that lasted deep into the summer, so count on something coming up.
James, who is on vacation in Anguilla this week, has stressed he'd like to wrap up his decision quickly.
In each those two cases, James or his representatives met with several teams.
The basketball player arrived just hours before NBA free agency opened with the three-time champion as its most coveted prize.
