Paula Godwin, from Arizona, US, was enjoying a hike with her dogs Todd and Cooper on Friday when she almost stepped on a rattlesnake.

The Arizona woman wrote on Facebook that on June 29, she had taken both of her dogs, Todd and Cooper, for a "carefree" morning walk. It was a attractive morning but as we were walking down the hill I literally nearly stepped on a ... rattlesnake.

However, her "hero of a puppy" Todd managed to jump out in front of it to protect her. "My hero of a puppy Todd saved me", she wrote. What a fearless boy!

The pup was bitten on his face by the snake instead. Thankfully, Godwin had a guardian angel in Todd.

Unfortunately, the snake bit the dog in the face.

Godwin posted an update on her Facebook page for those anxious about his health and wrote, he seems to heal well.

Paula told Eyewitness News that as of Sunday night Todd is "playing, [and] doing great". "Say a little prayer for my sweet hero".

Speaking in a video shared in the aftermath of the bite, Paula explained: "He for sure saved me from getting bit". He was in the hospital for about 12 hours and is going to recover well, said the pup's owner. "He's expected to make a full recovery and has been rewarded our fifth ever 15/10", the tweet read.
