About 45 minutes before his tweet announcing George's re-signing with Oklahoma City, Wojnarowski tweeted, "Presti wanted to hold the Thunder's meeting with Paul George in OKC - with a party that's one more element to the franchise's year-long recruiting effort on George".
Paul George will be a member of the Thunder for the foreseeable future.
As a Southern California native, the pull of returning to Tinseltown is strong for PG13 but he's motivated by winning a championship and believes staying with OKC and playing alongside Russell Westbrook could give him the best chance to do that.
There had been much speculation leading up to the decision that George had been leaning toward re-signing with the Thunder.
Oklahoma City finished with 48 victories and the Western Conference's 4th seed but were eliminated by the Utah Jazz in 6 games in the first round of the playoffs. But considering the Thunder would be well north of $25 million over the luxury tax line in that scenario, that would take Oklahoma City's combined payroll and luxury taxes up to roughly $255 million. Oklahoma City could face the largest tax bill in National Basketball Association history, according to ESPN.
Where is Paul George most likely to play next season? "If you did a two-plus-one with Oklahoma City and you stayed in Oklahoma City, you're eligible for a five-year max in two years and you hit the market [again] when you're 30-years-old rather than when you're 32". The deal reportedly carries a player option on the final season.
George, who played the first seven seasons of his eight-year career with the Pacers, averaged 21.9 points per game in 79 games last season, above his career average of 18.6.
