The Phillie Phanatic has been launching hot dogs into the stands at baseball games for many years.
The baseball team's mascot, the Phillie Phanatic, was shooting frankfurters into the crowd from his hot dog cannon during Monday's MLB game against the St. Louis Cardinals. She's okay, but her face is pretty messed up.
McVay was seated behind home plate when the Phanatic rolled onto the field on a mobile hot dog launcher, as he (it?) has been doing for over a decade.
"I think it just came so fast". She said all of a sudden, she noticed one of the duct-taped, wrapped hot dogs was coming right for her!
The Phillies apologized to McVay Tuesday, and have offered her tickets to any game. A shoulder injury kept her from catching the hot dog or swatting it away. "And hard", McVay said.
"And then the next thing I know he shot it in our direction, and bam!" Her facial injury requires ice every 20 minutes.
"I have a small hematoma under my eye", McVay explained WPVI TV in Philadelphia. "And mostly, it's going to get worse before it gets better", McVay said. McVay also advised fellow fans, "Just to be aware, because you never know". People, that means it's not soft buns hitting your face but rather a hot dog made firm by outside forces.
To her credit, McVay understands the ridiculous nature of her injury and is taking it all in stride.
"It gives people a good laugh", McVay told 6 ABC Philadelphia, "and if that makes somebody chuckle, then that's fine".
