The release of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom makes it five movies at this point, and there's no end in sight. As expected, that's behind the $18.5 million earned in previews by Jurassic World (2015) but is still a good number on its own. But in comparison to the first movie, that's a fairly significant dropoff.
The video even references Laura Dern's role as Vice Admiral Holdo in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi". When a franchise just does the same thing again and again, it's time to stop. Opening estimations hint that audiences are ready to take in an action-packed spectacle after more character-driven films like Ocean's Eight, Tag, and Hereditary. Jurassic World earned $652.2 million domestic and a whopping $1.019 billion from worldwide markets for a global total of $1.671 billion from a $150 million budget. While that figure won't be enough to launch the J.A. Bayona feature into the top ten opening weekends ever, considering that it's already made $450 million overseas, Universal still has hundreds of millions of reasons to believe in Jurassic World 3.
We'll see how high Fallen Kingdom soars this weekend, but it's got solid competition in Pixar's Incredibles 2, which smashed the opening weekend record for an animated film last weekend.
