Will Power won the race in it's 102nd running, edging out Ed Carpenter at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
It got Power into the most storied winner's circle in history this morning when he won the Indy 500 to give Penske a 17th victory in "The Great American Race".
Wilson, making his second Indy 500 start and only third career IndyCar Series start, was forced to surrender the lead, pitting for fuel with four laps remaining and handing the lead to Power. As CNET noted, there are also a few different options for watching the Indy 500 online (including a link below to the race).
For a driver who once struggled on oval circuits, the victory on the most iconic oval of them all was the realization of a long-cherished dream. She became the first woman to win an IndyCar Series race in 2008. I just couldn't imagine winning a race in front of a crowd like this. It was just wonderful. Danica Patrick's career ended when she lost control and slammed into the wall.
"And then I go on and two pit and I'm like 'Man, I think I'm going to win this!'"
"I can't believe it!" he screamed in the winner's circle.
A stream of marquee names had fallen by the wayside by then. Defending race victor Takuma Sato, Danica Patrick, Sebastien Bourdais, three-time victor Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan lost control and wrecked.
Patrick's 14-year career came to a devastating end, with the United States driver retiring from the Indianapolis 500 race this morning.
I spoke to him briefly after the race, and I just said "I told you so", based on a little chat we had before it. "But I'm grateful for all of it".
"I wish my teammates could've been up there more as well, but it's been a while since I had a top five here, so feels good to finish in a good position". Bourdais crashed a year after missing the race because of a harrowing, high-speed accident during qualifying, while Castroneves - who is now driving sports cars for Penske - was going for a record-tying fourth victory in the Indy 500 in a brief return to open-wheel racing.
"Please, Roger, let me go back", Castroneves said after stepping out of his vehicle.
"It just swung around as soon as I recommitted back to the throttle - so I wasn't expecting it by any means".
Sato cited high closing rates in the incident and said he was powerless to avoid it once he came within proximity of an "air pocket" behind Davison's vehicle. "It was definitely tough out there".
They were hopefully going to try and get the vehicle tuned up throughout the race but I think he had a rollbar issue was well; I could hear him saying he couldn't adjust the rollbar.
