Leaders of Hamas, the Islamic militant group that rules Gaza, visited protest tents near the border and vowed to continue the weekly rallies they're leading.
People in the besieged Gaza Strip plan to break through the Israeli-imposed sea blockade on the impoverished sliver, while Tel Aviv tries to erect a sea barrier to bar desperate Gazans from breaching the decade-long siege. The bomb was detonated by army engineers, causing no casualties, the military said on Twitter.
"No other barrier like this exists in the world today", Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman enthused regarding the combination wall being built underwater and above ground at the northern edge of the Gaza Strip.
It added that the strike was also in retaliation for repeated Palestinian attempts to damage the border fence and "security infrastructure" during ongoing border protests. "Returning to the land of Palestine".
The defense forces tweeted "No injuries to IDF soldiers were reported".
Israel's Defense Ministry on Sunday began the construction of a sea barrier on the Gaza Strip border, a move which had been decided in the days following the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict, a.k.a. Operation Protective Edge.
Over a hundred Palestinians have been killed in the rolling protests and clashes, mostly from Israeli gunfire and thousands more injured.
Low-level demonstrations along the border have continued since protests peaked on 14 May, when at least 61 Palestinians died while tens of thousands of Gazans protested as the USA moved its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.
He also appealed to the global community to pressure Israel to lift the blockade on the Gaza Strip and on worldwide NGOs to provide protection to anti-siege ships.
It accuses Hamas, with whom it has fought three wars since 2008, of seeking to use the protests as cover to carry out violence.
