"At Uber, we want to bring together multiple modes of transportation right in our app so we can give riders a viable alternative to personal auto ownership", said Jahan Khanna, Head of Product, Mobility at Uber.
Since its founding in 2009, Uber has expanded rapidly.
"We see the Uber app as moving from just being about auto sharing and vehicle hailing to really helping the consumer get from A to B in the most affordable, most dependable, most convenient way, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told Techcrunch, which reported that the deal was worth close to $200 million".
According to Uber, the app, which is still in Beta version is one among many initiatives the company plans to take, as part of what it calls "180 days of change".
'We're particularly excited about JUMP Bikes because they can provide a convenient and environmentally friendly ride that's often faster, especially in dense cities where space is limited and roads can be congested, ' Khosrowshahi continued. The bikes are made in NY city while the service operates in San Francisco, and Washington D.C. Future plans include expanding to Sacramento, California and Providence, Rhode Island before the end of the year. Today the word comes down that Uber has acquired the electric bike-sharing service, Jump.
Uber Kenya has signed partnership deals with nine firms in a move meant to make vital services quickly available to its partners and drivers.
Uber Rent powered by Getaround enables Uber riders to instantly signup, reserve and unlock cars on the Getaround platform right from the Uber app.
This builds on a previous partnership announced in May 2017 where people without cars can rent a rideshare-ready Getaround vehicle to drive with Uber and earn money.
Uber said it's partnering with peer-to-peer auto sharing service Getaround for the program. "It is somewhat compelling to be able to get all your transportation through one platform".
The launch came after the "180 days of change" program introduced by Uber a year ago in June for making amendments as per the request of the drivers, like tipping and compensation for the time spent by the drivers while they wait for their passengers. "If this goes on, you'll simply have gridlock". However, as Uber looks to expands its transportation options it may lure some riders back to mass-transit.
The new Uber driver app will be available for driver partners in Kochi and courier partners in Chennai in India before being rolled out to other cities in a phased manner.
