"Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release", Trump wrote. "They must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws", Trump wrote on Twitter early Monday morning, calling upon Congress to pass legislation securing the border.
Trump rescinded the Obama-era program, which protects immigrants who arrived in the country without documents as children, but it is now tied up in the courts and the fate of the so-called "Dreamers" remains in a legal limbo. "And a lot of people are coming in because they want to take advantage of DACA and we're going to have to really see", he said.
"They had a great chance. This is a crisis of his own creation", Democratic Senator Dick Durbin said in a post on Twitter.
"Once they enter the country, even if we are standing at the border with our hands out saying, "Don't enter, don't enter, ' all they have to do is cross one foot into the border and we have to take them into custody", he said". Many expressed their hope that the sheer size of the group would deter anyone - criminal, official, or otherwise - from stopping them. "It can't happen that way anymore".
Trump announced the cancellation of Daca a year ago. In his comments Sunday, he appeared to be confused about the rules of the program. They laugh at our dumb immigration laws.
Trump ignores the fact that it was his administration that terminated DACA.
But detention centers have continued releasing low-risk immigrants, as the backlog of immigration court cases reaches the hundreds of thousands. The current march is scheduled to end this month with a conference on migration issues in the central Mexican state of Puebla, east of Mexico City. A BuzzFeed reporter is embedded with the group, providing the movement with some media coverage, and Fox News, the president's preferred news source, has also documented the effort.
"More enforcement will not prevent people from coming to the United States escaping war, poverty from their home countries", she said in a telephone interview. About one third of the migrants traveling plan to stay in the country rather than continue on to the U.S.
Trump's Sunday comments may have been mere musings by an impassioned "Fox & Friends" viewer and may not signal a substantive shift in administration policies.
President Donald Trump once again took aim at the Senate filibuster, a procedural maneuver that can thwart legislation without at least 60 votes to end debate on the subject.
The president began expressing his frustration with DACA over the weekend at his private Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Fla.
In September the White House rescinded the program, which protected immigrants from deportation.
This might not matter much to the president, because he did not need the Latino vote to win the White House in 2016. An outspoken immigration hard-liner, Hannity is a Trump booster and informal presidential adviser, in addition to hosting a radio show and prime-time Fox show.
"DACA is dead because the Democrats didn't care or act, and now everyone wants to get onto the DACA bandwagon", Trump tweeted.
Proposed DACA deals crafted by lawmakers and rejected by Trump also were not open to new participants. "His true position was always anti-immigrant".
And Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) tweeted that Trump is making statements about undocumented immigration that do not even apply to DACA.
"Everyone who qualifies for DACA must show they lived in United States nearly 11 years ago", he wrote.
But on the first day of April, the president was singing what sounded like a different tune - and it wasn't an April Fools' joke. The deal fell apart when Trump insisted the deal include severe cuts to legal immigration.
Has Congress got the message from the American people?
But some Republicans joined the chorus of criticism.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a Republican, chided Trump over the tone of the tweets. Remember, today is Easter Sunday. An inaccurate news report should not serve to question this strong cooperation.
"Congress must immediately pass Border Legislation, use Nuclear Option if necessary, to stop the massive inflow of Drugs and People". And we wanted to include DACA in this bill. "All of that, and then you don't get to the United States".
The most popular compromise in the Senate would have given in to the White House's demands, which included $25 billion for construction of the wall along the US-Mexico border and other security measures in addition to providing a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients.
He said Mexico must "stop the big drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA". Trump says NAFTA is bad for the U.S. Mexico has refused to pay.
