Officials say more than 6,200 people came through the church Friday to pay their final respects to the former first lady, who died Tuesday at her Houston home.
Family and friends will remember former First Lady Barbara Bush at her funeral Saturday morning in Houston.
The late former first lady dedicated many years of her life to promoting literacy, which she saw as a gateway to opportunities and a future.
"Here in Houston, we saw her at major galas, behind home plate at Astros games, praying here in the pews, catching up with a neighbor while pushing her own buggy in Walgreens", he said.
There, lined up along Barbara Bush Drive, were hundreds of members of the Corps of Cadets to welcome the motorcade. Reflecting the celebratory spirit of the ceremony, Meacham drew roaring laughter from the guests, relaying self-deprecating anecdotes about Bush's preference for another author, John Grisham, and her tendency to lovingly prod her children.
After she died, Obama and his wife praised Bush "for the generosity she showed to us throughout our time in the White House". Behind them, her husband and former President George H.W. Bush followed in his wheelchair, which was pushed by their son, former President George W. Bush.
But the President did tweet a photo of the former First Lady's White House portrait, saying, "today, my thoughts and prayers are with the entire Bush family".
To celebrate his wife's love of books and literacy advocacy, George H.W. Bush reportedly wearing his "book socks".
They stood at attention and saluted as that procession of about 13 vehicles arrived with the former first lady.
Bush's body will be taken to the George Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M in College Station.
Barbara Bush's longtime friend Susan Baker, the wife of former Secretary of State James Baker, was also scheduled to speak. "I'm a blessed man who Barbara Bush was my mother", President George W. Bush wrote of his mother who made the nick name "the Enforcer" for keeping arrangement in your house.
In another tribute, Susan Baker, the wife of former Secretary of State James Baker and Bush's longtime friend and confidante, called her a "vibrantly handsome human being".
The former first lady's son Jeb Bush also stepped to the lectern, and shared what his mother most likely would have advised him in delivering his eulogy: "Jeb, keep it short, don't drag this out ... and don't get weepy".
The burial site is in a gated plot surrounded by trees and near a creek where the couple's 3-year-old daughter, Robin, who died of leukemia in 1953, is buried. Many were seen embracing in the church before the service.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne Cheney, will attend as well, according to a source close to the family. "She had grit [and] grace, brains [and] beauty", the former president said on social media.
