Xi Jinping became president in 2013 and now looks likely to lead China indefinitely, after the National People's Congress (NPC) - a rubber-stamp parliamentary session that meets once a year - voted to remove a two-term limit on the presidency from the constitution. But China's opposition to a United Nations ban on Pakistani terrorist and JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar, who plotted terror attacks at bases of Indian armed forces, has also strained their relations.
"We should safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country and achieve full unification of the motherland", the Chinese President said, adding "unification" was the "the aspiration of all Chinese people".
"All will receive the condemnation of the people and the punishment of history".
In his speech in the Great Hall of the People, Mr Xi highlighted major achievements of Chinese history, like the invention of gunpowder and the writings of Confucius.
President Xi Jinping called for more efforts in achieving the goal of building China into a great modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious, and handsome by the middle of the century.
More energy and more concrete measures are also required in developing a great socialist culture in China, cultivating and observing core socialist values, and promoting the creative evolution and development of fine traditional Chinese culture, according to Xi.
"In the face of national righteousness and the tide of history, all attempts or tricks aimed at dividing the motherland are doomed to failure", Xi said to loud applause.
He also sought to allay the concerns of the world about rising China as well as his multi-billion dollar pet project, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), saying that China's development does not pose a threat to any other country. He is being widely compared to Mao because the Chinese parliament has removed the two-term limit + on the president, allowing Xi to rule as long as he wishes.
The comments were a clear warning to places like Taiwan, which is self-ruling but considered by Beijing to be a a rebel region that must be reunited with the mainland - by force if necessary. "Prime Minister for many times to determine that China and India will build a closer developmental partnership to make great headway in bilateral cooperation in a variety of areas", he said.
"China will never develop itself at the expense of the interests of other countries", he said.
China was angered by legislation introduced by Donald Trump which encourages exchange visits by high-ranking United States and Taiwanese officials, thereby raising the island's diplomatic status.
"No matter how high a position one holds, all personnel of state organs should keep firmly in mind that our republic is the People's Republic of China", Xi noted.
