Brees re-structured his contract to cut a cap hit in 2016 almost in half, pro-rating a signing bonus of $18 million over three years, starting in 2018.
Brees set an National Football League record for completion percentage (72.0) last season despite throwing for his fewest yards (4,334), touchdowns (23) and interceptions (eight) in his 12 seasons with the Saints. While Brees leaving the comfort of Sean Payton's offense is still unlikely, the Saints are playing a unsafe game by letting it get to this point. Others predicted that Brees was too loyal to leave his longtime home. So close, they have just agreed to a new contract for $50 million over two years.
"Now the Saints can focus on continuing to build their roster and remain legitimate Super Bowl contenders this season".
Not much other than rumors of interest from various teams happened on the first day of the tampering period, with the most notable story coming out of New Orleans byway of Minneapolis.
While Brees stays put, the man who helped break Saints' hearts in the playoffs is on the move.
By the time Brees' new contract expires, he could very well be the NFL's all-time leader in yards and touchdowns passing.
A situation where Brees walked away from the Saints would have needed to be so profoundly screwed up that all bridges had been burned. Currently, Peyton Manning holds those marks with 71,940 yards and 539 touchdowns.
A pillar of the New Orleans Saints has made a decision to walk away. "Brees is back! Back with the Saints and back for another Super Bowl title".
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the contract will be a one-year contract with a team option for the final season.
"Certainly, the relationship with this city will always play a strong role in me wanting to be here and ... wanting to finish my career here", Brees said.
