A Broward County Sheriff Department sergeant reportedly found the deputy sleeping in his patrol auto around 5 p.m. Tuesday outside of the 1200 building, site of the murders.
He also used "NickCruz" - a disturbing nod to the admitted shooter in last month's spree - as his screenname for online survival game Fortnite, police said.
The second student, identified as 16-year-old Gavin Stricker was taken into custody after a 9-inch knife was found in his backpack, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
"Of all the schools in America, you would think this would be the safest one right now", said U.S. Sen.

Three students from the school were arrested on Tuesday in separate incidents and even a sheriff's deputy was suspended.
"Today, I am requesting that immediate action be taken to require an armed law enforcement officer to secure every point of entry at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School while students are on campus".
Reports from the Broward Sheriff's Office revealed that two of the high school's students were arrested for bringing knives to school.
When the boy leaned in close to her face, she pulled a 2-inch black knife from her bra, opened it and flashed it at him, according to a report from the Broward Sheriff's Office. He had allegedly been displaying a knife on the bus on Monday, a student told teachers.
'Recent events at the school have demonstrated the need for additional security measures to be implemented.

The deputy's suspension is one of the latest incidents to occur at the school this week. The same shooting has sparked nationwide debates about banning the purchase of semi-automatic weapons and promoted a National School Walkout, organized by students, in protest of gun violence.
"All safety protocols for routine school operations are being reinforced at all schools". Cruz also must wear an ankle monitor and must stay at least 500ft away from any school or daycare center.
