Look to Uber's travail in Tempe as the latest example. On Tuesday, Uber informed the California Department of Motor Vehicles that it would not renew its license to operate self-driving vehicles in the state. Executives of companies that supply autonomous vehicle technologies pointedly said their their systems were capable of detecting the pedestrian.
The email exchanges fill in the gaps between what Ducey was saying publicly since taking office in early 2015 and what was happening behind the scenes as his administration helped Uber set up shop in the state and then launch its driverless vehicle testing program.
The company also actively tests vehicles that drive themselves in the Canadian province of Ontario, including the state of Pennsylvania. Uber also stated that it was cooperating with authorities in regard to the ongoing investigation. When they will be completed remains anyone's guess.
The incident marked the first pedestrian death stemming from a traffic accident involving a self-driving vehicle and while preliminary results of Tempe PD's investigation suggest the autonomous Uber auto wasn't at fault for the accident, the firm promptly suspended all of its driverless technology trials throughout the United States.
In one email, dated August 19, 2016, Uber official Ashwini Chhabra emailed Ducey's deputy chief of staff, Danny Seiden. "It was well known that companies were operating self-driving cars". Japanese auto giant Toyota also tapped the brakes on its autonomous vehicle testing after the Uber accident, while German titan BMW maintained pace.
Uber, based in San Francisco, did not return an email seeking comment.
"We are proud to welcome innovation to Arizona", he said.
The successful completion of the test, done with the cooperation of ZTE and China Telecom, is expected to kick off 5G's application in autonomous driving as a high-speed, reliable network is essential for driverless cars to be deemed safe in sometimes chaotic, unpredictable real world conditions.
Ducey's top aides and Uber executives already had a cozy relationship by the time the Volvos showed up, according to several dozen emails provided to 12 News through a public records request to the governor's office.
