What speech stuck out to you the most at the 2018 Oscars?
The personal reward for Peele is "all the attractive moments of meeting heroes", like fellow victor Gary Oldman - who took home the best actor award. "I'm so proud to be part of a time, the beginning of a movement, where I feel like the best films in every genre are being brought to me by my fellow black directors".
Peele made a point to thank those who helped him become an Oscar victor, including those who green-lit his movie and the people who saw it in theaters.
"You're not a failure if you don't get this, but I nearly didn't do it, because I didn't believe that there was a place for me". The latter sent his congratulations via his Brooklyn Nine Nine co-star (and Peele's wife) Chelsea Peretti.
Although Hollywood actors and execs would mostly consider themselves liberal, racist practices continued to exist in the film industry for decades.
Peele's award was the only one for Get Out, as it lost in the other three categories it was nominated for: Best Actor, Best Director, Best Picture.
"I'm writing it now, an idea I've had for a while", he says. Get Out isn't just his first movie as a filmmaker, but a rare genre movie that actually managed to get some very serious love from the Academy, something that nearly never happens.
The Shape of Water is notable for being the first movie featuring a female lead character to win the night's top prize in 13 years.
Before Get Out, he was best known as one half of the Comedy Central duo "Key and Peele" alongside Keegan-Michael Key, with whom he produced the 2016 comedy Keanu. And it only took 90 years for the Academy to come around.
