Idol was always the best of the singing competition shows and, at least in the USA, the form's progenitor.
Country singing sensation Luke Bryan, pop icon Katy Perry, and music mogul Lionel Richie are slated to serve as the new judges on American Idol. They also learned about Perry's secret talent of imitating a frog, saw Bryan tune a contestant's guitar, and heard Richie's alpaca trauma. The first round of auditions were held in New York City, Nashville, Los Angeles and Orlando. After he sang Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely", Lionel hugged him, Katy cried, and all three judges told him he was going to Hollywood.
There were also multiple heartwrenching backstories: 22-year-old Ron Bultongez talked about coping with his abusive father.
Ron, a 21-year-old entrepreneur originally from Congo who now resides in Plano, TX, sang "Let It Go" by James Bay.
In a weird move, Richie chose to bring Bultongez back. Let's wait and watch how this series will perform. The judges were delighted to send him through. And 16-year-old Harper Grace landed a well-deserved ticket to Hollywood after she confessed that she went viral at age 11 for a truly bad rendition of the national anthem. She's next in line to inherit her family's furniture store, but won't have to if she can make it as a singer. She gets through to Hollywood. "I can't take it down, dumba****", she said while walking out of the audition. All of the judges love her voice so they vote her through and she has an entire clan waiting for her! Katy declared he could be "top 10", and called him "the best male singer we've seen so far".
"Have you kissed a girl and liked it?"
After composing himself, Glaze began his audition singing Nick Jonas's hit "Levels". "Your first kiss was Katy Perry".
In L.A., we see two polar opposites: sullen rocker Nico Bones and jolly farm boy Noah Davis. Noah, meanwhile, immediately wins them over with his sparkling personality and his odd desire to own an alpaca. He sings Stay by Rhianna on the piano. In the words of Katy Perry: "Wig: snatched!" Six years later, here she was auditioning for American Idol. First was 18-year-old Catie Turner from Langhorne. Pa.
The show saves the best for last: 26-year-old Philly native Dennis Lorenzo.
A tearful Perry, who had lost her voice by the time Francisco auditioned, couldn't hold back emotion as she explained that she spent most of the performance watching his fiancée and seeing "how in love she is".
