Probably one of the most anticipated pirate titles since Man O' War: Corsair - Warhammer Naval Battles, Sea of Thieves is a naval buff's wet dream, so to speak, allowing the players to wage wars between them and plunder settlements. "[At launch], there's a lore book, featuring adventures of early players in the game's production, a separate art book, a comic, a Limited Edition controller, a branded SeaGate HDD, a tankard and more".
The closed beta notoriously threw players into the world with virtually no instruction of where to go or what to do. If you do find yourself being ambushed by a rival group, the combat system is varied enough to let some party members use a variety of weapons ranging from handguns to sniper rifles. They won't lock players out, either.
There won't be any sliders or customization options at this point - you have to choose a pirate and move on. Players will not be able to customize the appearance and traits of their pirate, a choice the developer deemed necessary for the implementation of some mechanics.
During the visit, studio head Craig Duncan was the guide, and during the downtime between hands-on sessions with the game, offered plenty of explanation on his studio's plans for the game once it releases on March 20.
And while Sea of Thieves is still a bigger version of the sandbox we explored last month, there will be a story to give the world a greater sense of objective.
"Our focus at launch [is] on a great game experience". You will also earn a legendary ship, but Rare wouldn't go into much detail, other than to say that it "has access to things other ships don't".
Rare insisted the premium shop will sell nothing that affects player power or progression.
In other words, there will not be any loot boxes. Then, within the next few months, Rare will begin to roll out the first expansions for the game.
The first paid content for the game will come in the form of pets.
It's a bold take in a sea (ha) of loot box-laden games, and one I hope they follow up on.
"Ultimately, as long as you've got Windows 10, you've got access to Sea of Thieves. We want to make sure we're enriching the experience for everyone, so new merchants, trading posts, and trading companies", Neate says.
The good news for owners of potato PCs is that Sea of Thieves will run on an Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200 or Iris 540 with 4 GB of RAM, a 5400 RPM hard drive (with 60GB free), and integrated graphics.
