If you're anything like me, then last night you were strictly watching the Super Bowl for the highly anticipated advertisements and Justin Timberlake's half-time show - but to my surprise, the number of new trailers that dropped completely stole the night.
"There is little depth, much unconvincing running, one-line stinkers you can smell coming, and some provocative moral quandaries that might have made for a better film if they weren't as glossed over", he continued.
Much like the view that "Cloverfield's" space station enjoys hovering above Earth, though, with the benefit of even a modicum of perspective, this attention-getting exercise, and certainly the movie, looks a whole lot smaller. The third installment stars Daniel Brühl, Roger Davies, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O'Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo and Zhang Ziyi.
DeFore notes that the film just doesn't hold up compared to the genre's sci-fi greats: "In Paradox, one is mostly struck by the need to push Alien and a half-dozen similar films from our minds, in the hopes of giving a damn about the sub-par space-station action before us".
As of Monday afternoon, the film has an 11 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. We also see from news footage with scientist Mark Stambler (Donal Logue) cautioning that the work being done on Cloverfield Station could rip apart space-time and cause monsters, demons, and other bad things to come into our universe.
As of time of writing, there are only 39 reviews counted so far. Do you agree with the critics that it's the worst movie in the series to date? It's the flawless way Netflix can insert themselves into the mainstream entertainment conversation. It's freakish, mostly confusing, and often uneventful, but for anyone hoping to unravel the mysteries of the Cloverfield universe, the film does provide an outline to the events in the other two films. If this was a test run for this kind of release, it definitely worked, and we have to assume Netflix will do this again when the time is right. Let us know in the comments!
Critics seem to agree that Cloverfield Paradox's weakest points are its characters and its story, with some calling it an terrible mess all around. "The film's true strength comes from its vision and incredibly strong cast". In fact, prior to release, Paramount Pictures elected to refer to the film as an Untitled Cloverfield Movie.
Beginning in the weeks leading up to the events of the first film, it introduces us to a world on the brink of war; our energy supplies having depleted to such an extent that our hopes now lie exclusively with a particle accelerator device that's orbiting the earth on a space station manned by Captain Kiel (David Oyelowo), and his broadly-drawn crew of global scientists (read: stereotypes).
