According to Jerry McDonald of the Mercury News, Gruden said, "Well, I think I am being considered, yes". "I spoke with [owner] Mark Davis after the game and Mark let me know that he's not going to be bringing me back".
The Oakland Raiders are expected to hire Jon Gruden as head coach. Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News reports that New York Jets offensive coordinator John Morton will be a target of Gruden's should he officially be tabbed by the Raiders. After leading the Raiders to 8-8 records his first two years, Gruden helped the team reach the AFC title game following the 2000 season and got Oakland back into the playoffs the following season. In his first season in Tampa, Gruden got his revenge as he led the Bucs to a 12-4 regular season and crushed the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII, 48-21. Rapoport added that Gruden was assembling a coaching staff in anticipation of returning to coaching, one that includes his former QB, Rich Gannon.
Del Rio became head coach in January 2015 and won 25 games and lost 23 in three seasons, including a 6-10 season this year.
In short, pumping new life into the offense is a must for the team in the offseason if Del Rio expects to remain on the Raiders roster. If the rumors are accurate, it will be up to Gruden to recapture the magic which led to a 12-4 record past year.
The Raiders will be required to comply with the "Rooney Rule" and interview at least one minority candidate or otherwise face discipline from the NFL.
If the Raiders do offer Gruden an ownership stake, there is a huge catch - it must be approved by other National Football League owners and there is a good reason to think they would be reluctant to do so.
Tom Flores was the first Hispanic coach to win a Super Bowl and the team also hired Hue Jackson as coach in 2011 and now employs Reggie McKenzie as general manager.
