And the end might be weeks away.
At 427 square miles, it is the largest fire in California's modern history, destroying 1,063 structures in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Iverson drove a fire engine and was killed on the east flank of the blaze. Temperatures are expected to reach the low- to mid-70s next week in Santa Barbara. Fewer have experienced Christmas on a large fire.
One fatality directly related to the fire has been reported, a firefighter who succumbed to burns and smoke inhalation in the line of duty last Thursday. About 775 were single-family homes.
A couple of apartment buildings also burned down.
December 24-Low winds continued to help firefighters make progress against the epic Thomas fire on Sunday, and favorable weather should provide further relief over the Christmas holiday, authorities said.
The Nevada Department of Corrections and Nevada Division of Forestry, which run conservation camps, sent six trained crews of minimum security inmates to help.
The state sent firefighters south as part of a mutual-aid agreement that brought California firefighters to assist with OR wildfires last summer. The Thomas fire had already burned an area larger than Manhattan but has spread to an area larger than "New York City, Washington, DC, and San Francisco combined" according to CNN. Mandatory evacuation orders for the Thomas Fire have been lifted.
This year is the worst on record for wildfire devastation in California.
