The BJP on Saturday accused Congress chief Rahul Gandhi of indulging in cheap barbs and lowering political discourse in his bid to gain power.

Rahul was accorded a warm welcome by the Congress workers as he reached the temple who garlanded him. A huge row had erupted during Gandhi's visit to Somnath on November 29 after an image with his and senior party leader Ahmed Patel's names, purportedly from a register meant for non-Hindus, went viral.

The Congress also issued a clarification in this regard on Twitter.

After the decision on one of the biggest corruption scandals which took place during Manmohan Singh's government, the 47-year-old Congress chief said, "You all know the truth now about 2G, the truth is in front of you".

Owaisi, earlier in the day, ridiculed Rahul's temple visit during Gujarat election campaigning, while saying that it is nothing but unscrupulous vote bank politics.

On December 12, Prime Minister Modi and Rahul Gandhi visited temples in Gujarat with the twin goal of seeking blessings and wooing voters.

Meanwhile, Rahul is expected to visit Gujarat's Somnath temple on Saturday ahead of a review meeting with newly-elected MLAs and party workers following Gujarat assembly election results.

The Congress won 77 seats in 182-member Gujarat Assembly.

Buoyed by its performance in Gujarat Assembly polls, the Congress" Gujarat unit organised "Chintan Shivir' in Mehsana on December 20-21 to discuss the results and prepare a roadmap for 2019 Lok Sabha polls. BJP's vote share in the state increased from 47.9 per cent (2012) to 49.1 per cent.

Later in the day, Rahul is slated to meet the participants of the shivir in Ahmedabad.
