Their visit to Nottingham comes four days after Harry and Markle announced their engagement.

For their first joint royal engagement, the couple, who will Wednesday next May, visited the National Justice Museum before heading off to the Nottingham Contemporary to attend the Terrence Higgins Trust charity fair, in honour of World AIDS Day, which falls on December 1.

"We're so happy for them both", Mary Cooper, 60, said. The pair also visited Nottingham Academy to learn about the work of Full Effect, an organization which empowers young people to be active in the causes they care about.

The couple's engagement was announced by Clarence House on Monday, in a statement posted to Twitter.

The couple, who will be married at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, next May, are planning to tour the United Kingdom in the six months leading up to their wedding so the former actress can get to know her new home.

Markle, a longtime actress in America, had been starring on the U.S. drama "Suits" when she began dating Harry, but confirmed after the engagement announcement that she is giving up her acting career.
