Huge revenue growth and the expansion into overseas game, including the International Series in the United Kingdom and Mexico, are notable success stories for the league whose Compensation Committee sent a memo to the 32 team owners on Wednesday and seen by Pro Football Talk, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and The Associated Press.
Both the sporting world and titans of industry were stunned the last time around that Goodell and his bosses wrangled a 10-year deal that seemed like forever at the time, and that they were able to out maneuver labor in basically every aspect of the deal, crushing them in many.
"Our committee unanimously supports the contract and believes that it is fully consistent with "market" compensation and the financial and other parameters outlined to the owners at our May 2017 meeting, as well as in the best interests of ownership", Blank wrote in the memo.
The memorandum to all owners explains that a "binding contract extension has been signed by the Commissioner and by Arthur Blank, on behalf of the League entities".
Were the timing on that deal different, Goodell might not have his new contract now.
Prior to this new deal, Goodell was making in the neighborhood of $30 million a year.
On the other hand, Goodell remains distrusted by many NFL players and fans of the league.
Goodell's demands were met with resistance by some around the league, particularly Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who tried to impede contract negotiations between Goodell and the NFL. We know that we speak for all of you, as well as for the Commissioner, in saying that the National Football League is strongest when our ownership is active and unified. Goodell suspended Elliott for six games for an alleged bout of domestic violence, but Elliott and his legal team fought the ban. However, he finally accepted his six-game suspension and is now serving it.
