If you can, try to go somewhere away from city lights. When you already know the best date and time to witness the meteor shower in India, the next question that comes to the mind is where to see it. Therefore scientists call a Meteor shower, the Geminids, the most striking among the starbursts.
The meteor burst through the sky shortly after 3 a.m. on December 2.
What is usually the strongest meteor shower of the year will peak in the night sky between December 13 and 14, but if you want a better chance of seeing the show you probably should not wait for the peak viewing time. They also suggest to give your eyes about 20 minutes to adapt to the dark for optimal viewing. Well, the best date and time to witness the Geminid shower in 2017 in India is December 14, between 1 AM and 2 AM in the night.
"Though the meteors tend to originate from the Gemini constellation, they can be observed from most parts of the sky".
The Geminid meteor shower itself was first noted in the 1860s. "The shower will start at around 10 pm on December 13 when the Gemini constellation will be visible in the north-eastern sky, a little above and right of the familiar Orion constellation", Duari said. It could either be a near-Earth asteroid or a dead comet, but there's no consensus about what it is, according to NASA. When the Earth passes through the trail left by Phaethon, the dust and debris it leaves behind appear as shooting stars as they burn up in the atmosphere of Earth.
Phaethon was discovered by astronomers in 1983.
NASA considers the Geminids one of the best and most reliable meteor showers - a better cosmic show than the Perseids meteor shower that get plenty of attention in August. A dead comet is the spent rock at the center of a comet that's ice has all been lost. Objects relatively close to Earth are illustrated, in general, as nearer to the cartoon figure with the telescope at the bottom center - although nearly everything pictured can be seen without a telescope.
