There won't be much suspense Saturday night in New York City when the Heisman Trophy is officially presented.
Penn State has not had a Heisman finalist in 15 years (Larry Johnson, 2002) and has not had a Heisman victor in 44 (John Cappelletti, 1973). The senior quarterback has completed 71.0 percent of his passes, throwing for 4,340 yards, 41 touchdowns and just five interceptions.
In recent interviews, Penn State's record-breaking running back had talked about the possibility of not being invited to NY for the Heisman Trophy ceremony, and how he was OK with it.
"It's a pleasure to welcome these three outstanding players to NY for the Heisman Trophy ceremony", said Rob Whalen, Executive Director of the Heisman Trophy Trust. He's also one of seven players to finish in the top 5 of the Heisman vote three times, joining Heisman legends Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard of Army, Doak Walker of SMU, Archie Griffin of Ohio State, Herschel Walker of Georgia and Tim Tebow of Florida.
Jackson's 2017 season has been better than previous year with regards to his completion percentage and interception count, but his team's lack of success could be an issue for Heisman voters.
Mayfield is the only finalist to lead his team to the 2017 College Football Playoff.
"There's a lot of things that I want to do and see (in New York), but this event, just being around the past winners and all the people that put on the event, it's special", Mayfield said.
Including his 125 yards in the Pac-12 title game against USC, the junior came through with 1,973 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns, showcasing his ability as arguably the best pure runner in the nation. Mayfield, is on pace to break his own NCAA record for passing efficiency with a mark of 203.76. The QB was stripped of his captaincy a couple weeks ago after making a lewd gesture during Oklahoma's win over Kansas.
The victor of the 2017 Heisman Trophy will be announced Sunday night on ESPN.
