Fitzgerald was carted off and while he was smiling as he left, the injury was extremely ugly.
Fitzgerald was injured on a 3-yard run at about the nine-minute mark of the first quarter.
Mississippi State athletic officials officially called it an ankle injury but said more tests were set to be done to determine its extent. The freshman has thrown for 66 yards and a touchdown this season. Keytaon Thompson, who has eight game appearances this season, came in for Fitzgerald. With 1,782 passing yards and 15 touchdowns through the air and 984 yards and 14 scores on the ground, the dual-threat Fitzgerald had been one of the top fantasy quarterbacks.
Fitzgerald was 1-of-5 passing with an interception and 16 yards rushing at the time of the injury.
